Individualized Approach
Accommodations look different for every person and depend on what each individual needs during their time at Northwest. Needs may even vary from semester to semester. Each student’s accommodation plan is unique and may include one or more of the accommodations below. Students may require an accommodation not featured on this list. An staff member will be able to let the student know what is/isn’t appropriate for their situation.
Students self-disclose the need for an accommodation, and must complete and then submit the fillable form and supporting documentation.
Emotional Support Animal requests to support a diagnosed disability should be completed and approved prior to the start of a semester if possible. An ESA lives with the student in the residence.
More about ESATesting accommodations can include but are not limited to: extended time on exams, exams taken in a distraction reduced environment, reader, scribe, and breaks during the exam.
This may include utilizing a computer to take notes or audio recording lectures.
Service dogs assisting individuals with physical disabilities are generally permitted in all facilities and programs on the university campus except as described in the policy.
MORE ABOUT Service AnimalsOnce a student is approved for accessible textbooks, a meeting should be scheduled with the Accommodation and Proctoring Coordinator to set up the Kurzweil software.
Temporary impairments are generally not regarded as disabilities, but conditions such as broken bones, short-term illnesses and recovery from surgery or medical conditions can impact a student’s academic progress.
The Office of Title IX & Equity can provide temporary services to assist students in their academic work. An appointment may be set up with one of the professional staff members to coordinate and arrange the services that are needed. Documentation of the medical condition may be necessary to arrange services.
If the temporary condition involves mobility issues (e.g. use of walker or crutches), Northwest Missouri State University does not provide personal shuttle services to and from classes. For more information, contact us at 660-562-1873.
